The Principal leads 6 Senior Teachers, 23 other Teachers, 2 clerks and 5 other staff members.” (Mr. Ho) “The role of feeder school benefits the pupils immensely. Parents are more likely to aid the school when they can largely be assured of their choice of secondary school later on. The pupil themselves, for the most part, do not have the fear of being dispersed through a host of schools with new ways and new attitudes. They will continue to keep the friends they have made. Much worry that parents feel and which is transmitted to children is thus removed and a more stable world for the growing child is built. The secondary school benefitted from the start. The average age of the students began to fall and within a space of years the age in the whole school had reached its proper level … The various activities in the school were also much helped; for the students of the secondary school being known to each other were quickly able to organise their clubs and associations. The many years spent in the similar surroundings rather than in diverse worlds cannot but help to build a steady firmly based inner world in the young people.” (Fr. Mallin) |

Kevin Lam Yuk Ming captured two grand trophies in the Schools Speech Festival. |
In his annual message before leaving his post of Supervisor, Fr. Reid remarked that the then 1.1 teacher per class manpower allocated by the Government was “hopelessly inadequate”. Fr. Mallin was appointed Supervisor, again.
The then PUDAHK President Mr. Ko Fook Sun passed away on 21 March. In an obituary, Fr. Mallin recalled that our School was founded based on Mr. Ko's efforts. Our hall was named “Tak Sing Hall” to commemorate Mr. Ko's generous heart to educate future generations. Fr. Mallin was transferred to Macau to head Colégio Mateus Ricci, and his Supervisor post was taken up by Fr. Derek Reid, S.J..
The last SSEE was held this year. Among the 180+ P.6 candidates, more than 120 scored results enabling them to be promoted to WYCHK, with 58 scoring the top grade in Mathematics, and 36 awarded the highest X1 level for combined results of Chinese, English and Mathematics. Principal Fr. Mallin and Teacher Mr. Kui Ming Hoi retired, Vice Principal Mr. Oliver Lam became Principal. Fr. Mallin became Supervisor, and he recalled his most memorable experience during his service was facing the dangers in the school premises (including the playground, the stairway and classrooms) with inadequate annual subsidy for repairs from the Education Department. Broken facilities often took years before being repaired. Only in later years the Government and PUDAHK were in better financial positions to fund the improvement works.
As with previous years, the School issued 1,800 P.1 admission application forms this year, and conducted the interviews during four days of school holidays in Feb. and Mar.. Although all staff members sacrificed their holidays, they still gave their best to prepare the pictures, questions, cassette tapes and props required during the interviews. The questions did not focus on Chinese, English or Mathematics, but on the child's ability to focus, comprehend and think.
The Flowers' Stewards were founded with 9 members, taking care of plants on the roof and the playground levels.
Fathers of WYCHK supported the School in different aspects: Fr. Grogan, S.J. visited the School every month to listen to confessions of Catholic students, Fr. Corbally, S.J. let us use their playground for our School's important sports competitions, Fr. McGaley, S.J. assisted in the P.1 entrance examination, Principal Fr. Barrett, S.J. let us use WYCHK's hall for our annual concert, etc.. The School began to appoint P.5&6 students as Fish Tank Managers, looking after six tanks of gold fish. The HKXV Cub Scouts held its first residential camp in Aug. at Morrison Hall, the former HKU student hostel.
As Typhoon Dot approached Hong Kong, the School held its second Graduation Ceremony in the hall on 16 Jul., with Mr. Ko Fook Sun presenting certificates. The Observatory raised the no.8 typhoon signal at 3:00 p.m., and the simple and solemn ceremony was conducted amid gale winds and heavy rain.
A 1972 graduate (of the first batch) described the first year of Fr. Mallin in our School as follows: “As our Mathematics teacher has to spend most of the lessons on Chinese Arithmetic, Rev. Fr. Mallin spends no less than five hours a week giving the three of us (we were the only ones taking English Arithmetic in the Secondary School Entrance Examination) special tuition. If we succeed in the SSEE, we certainly owe our success to our Headmaster. Rev. Fr. Mallin has so much to do that he is kept busy from morning till night. He teaches, takes care of his pupils during recess time, gives tuition to backward pupils, see parents and does a hundred and one other things. Yet, busy as he is, he is never annoyed. I have never seen him losing his temper, not even when I made repeated mistakes in the tests he gave me. I trust, respect and love my Headmaster.” The Cub Scouts Pack, belonging to WYCHK's 15th Hong Kong Troop, was founded in November.
PUDAHK discussed with WYCHK's Jesuit Fathers the question of collaborating to run the primary school. Fr. Cyril Barrett, S.J. whose earlier principalship in WYCHK ended in 1962, was re-appointed Principal in 1970. As recalled by Fr. Joseph Mallin, S.J., Mr. Ko and Fr. Barrett knew each other, and they knew what difficulties the two schools were facing during those years: The Education Department's Form 1 admission arrangements for WYCHK were unsatisfactory, and Pun U Association Primary School was surrounded by at least 12 primary schools many of which had linked secondary schools. Both parties felt that making the primary school a feeder school to WYCHK would be beneficial to both. PUDAHK and the Society of Jesus signed the contract in Jun., and starting from Sep., began their collaboration in running the renamed new school “Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School”. Fr. Mallin was transferred from Wah Yan College, Kowloon to be appointed as the Founding Principal. Fr. Barrett, the Supervisor, arranged a competent and experienced Wahyanite educator, Mr. Oliver Lam, to assist Fr. Mallin in academic development, admitting new students, retaining the original teachers and hiring new teachers of this bi-sessional school.

The construction cost of the new school was $500,000, with $205,000 of interest-free loan and subsidy from the Government, PUDAHK needed to raise about $300,000. On 2 Jan., PUDAHK launched the school construction fundraising exercise, with Chairman Ko Fook Sun taking the lead to donate $100,000 in the name of 'Ko Tak Sing Tong'. Other donors followed suit, resulting in more than $200,000 raised on that day.
